Blu-rays for the Weekend: Ultimate Alien Movies

With new exciting details emerging on Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi epic and rumoured Alien prequel Prometheus, this week we focus our selection on all things alien. So, if you are planning to spend some serious quality time with your sofa this weekend, why not treat your Blu-ray player to one of the following?

Predators

For fans of serious action, blood and violence, the latest instalment of the Predator franchise, Predators, will be just the thing. Produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimród Antal, the film follows an all-star-cast of elite warriors including Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne and Alice Braga, who find themselves on an alien planet being hunted by a merciless race of aliens known as Predators. What follows is the ultimate battle of survival – kill or be killed. If this gripping sci-fi epic is not enough for you, the Blu-ray comes with host of riveting extras including motion comics, commentary by Robert Rodriguez and Nimród Antal, making of featurettes and interviews with the central characters.

Cloverfield

If you prefer to stay on planet earth for your alien movie fixes, look no further than Cloverfield. During a crowded house party a group of young Manhattanites’ (Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, T.K. Miller, and Odette Yustman) personal problems are swept away when New York comes under sudden attack from a Godzilla-like monster creating mayhem. Equipped with a camcorder, the gang is caught up in the epicentre of destruction as they try and rescue a love interest. Cleverly shot from the view of a single camcorder, the story takes you to the heart of fear and danger in this original take on the disaster movie. Accompanying this action-packed feast are a whole host of features including a making of featurette, commentary by director Matt Reeves, four additional scenes, two alternate endings and insights into the visual effects that made the film so special.

Paul

If violent alien hunting is not to your taste and your heart is set on a friendlier visitor from outer space in the tradition of ALF and ET, Paul may be just the thing for you. The plot centres around a wise-cracking alien called Paul who crash-landed on planet earth in the late 1940s and has since been held prisoner by the government’s men in black. Thinking enough is enough, Paul looks to find a way home with help from comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This light-hearted, hilarious road movie with a difference is bound to brighten your mood. Add to that a host of fun additional special features, including a making of featurette and commentary by Greg Mottola, Nira Park, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, and you’ve a recipe for a great night’s viewing.
