The Apocalypse is nigh – Coppola’s masterpiece set for UK Blu-ray release

Heralded by many as the film that crystallises most perfectly the experience of the Vietnam War, avid fans of Apocalypse Now will be delighted to hear that it is getting a European Blu-ray release on June 13.

Under his close supervision, hours have been spent painstakingly restoring Francis Ford Coppola’s hallucinatory masterpiece for a special 3-disc Blu-ray release.

For those who might have missed this work of genius, Apocalypse Now has an all-star critically acclaimed cast that includes Robert Duvall (The Road), Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider), Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix Trilogy).  Set in the height of the war in Vietnam, and U.S. Army Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is sent by Colonel Lucas (Harrison Ford) and a General to carry out a mission that, officially, ‘does not exist – nor will it ever exist’. The mission: To seek out a mysterious Green Beret Colonel, Walter Kurtz, whose army has crossed the border into Cambodia and is conducting hit-and-run missions against the Viet Cong and NVA. If you’re not a fan already, this really is a classic movie that should be bumped to the top of your ‘to-buy’ list!

But don’t just take our word for it, according to review site Shadowlocked:

“There is a credible argument that this may well be the most essential Blu-ray Disc that there ever is, ever was, and ever will be.”

“Quite simply, just taking the film alone, the Apocalypse Now experience on Blu-ray is damn near perfect….watching the many iconic scenes again on this new Blu-ray release feels like seeing them – truly seeing them – for the very first time. Every plume of smoke, every lick of flame, every tree, every leaf, every drop of water on the Colonel’s shaved head – it’s all so crystal clear’

And it would appear that’s not all in terms of good news, since the Blu-ray is also jam packed with an array of veritable supplemental delicacies for fans to dive into.
