Sony makes first moves towards Blu-ray in 4K

At last week’s CES show, Sony announced a series of “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray titles that will be optimised for the new wave of 4K Ultra HD TVs that manufacturers hope to release later this year.

Titles including The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, The Karate Kid, Battle: Los Angeles and The Other Guys will hit the shelves in the spring, with more to follow. These “Mastered in 4K” titles will all be sourced from their original 4K masters and then presented at a high-bitrate 1080p resolution. Sony has said this will expand the colour showcasing to include a wider range of colour than was initially contained in the original source. As a result, early 4K TV adopters will be able to enjoy these titles upscaled to near 4K quality.
