Five of the best Blu-ray Easter Eggs

With Easter just around the corner, we thought we’d mark the occasion by looking at some of our favourite Easter Eggs. However we’re not looking at the chocolate variety – we’re talking about those top secret bonus features that are hidden away on some Blu-ray discs.

Here are five for you to look out for. We’ll cover five more next week. Before you get started, a quick word of warning: Blu-rays vary from country to country and sometimes get re-released in different forms – so depending on where you read this, there’s a chance you might not find them.  But you never know until you try!

Star WarsBlu-ray: Star Wars Original Trilogy Box Set

Easter Egg: A rare animated short, featuring fan favourite bounty hunter Boba Fett, which was originally made for the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. If you ever wanted to see more of Boba Fett (and what Star Wars fan hasn’t?) then watching him ride a dinosaur is a decent place to start!

How to find it: You need the disc featuring archive content from Episodes IV to VI. From the main menu, click on Episode V, then find the “Pursued by the Imperial Fleet” section. Then go into “The Collection” and choose the “Boba Fett Prototype Costume.” A menu on the right side of the screen has the option “First Look.” Click that to get a brief introduction and background on the special before it starts playing.

Dark KnightBlu-ray: The Dark Knight

Easter Egg: A previously unseen version of the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s epic Batman Begins sequel, which has been ‘jokerised’ by the film’s villain.

How to find it: Put Disc 2 into your player, select the third theatrical trailer and then slowly press 5, 6, 5, 3, 7 (the numbers that correspond to the word ‘Joker’). If you’ve done it right, the screen will go blank and the new trailer will start playing

AvengersBlu-ray: The Avengers

Easter Egg: Secret files on all of the superheroes that make up The Avengers, from Iron Man to Thor.

How to find it: Load up the main menu of the disc and highlight ‘Play’. But rather than selecting it, press left on your remote and the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo should become highlighted. Hit enter and the secret files will be yours!

Monsters IncBlu-ray: Monsters University

Easter Egg: A behind-the-scenes clip showing how the opening credits sequence to Pixar’s hit sequel was created.

How to find it: From the main menu, highlight ‘Bonus Features’ but then press left on your remote. A silhouette of Dean Hardscrabble should appear, after which hit enter to access the clip.

SimpsonsBlu-ray: The Simpsons Movie

Easter Egg: One for the geeks: a loving spoof of the famous THX ‘The Audience is Listening’ trailer that preceded many films In the 1990s. Done as only The Simpsons could.

How to find it:  Go to the ‘Audio setup’ section and select ‘English DTS 5.1’ – but press Up on your remote instead of Enter. If you do it right, a donut will appear on the screen – click this to start the clip.
