An image of Thor on Blu-rayAccording to research from the Digital Entertainment Group, the home entertainment industry is booming, with a five percent upsurge in sales in 2011’s third quarter, with sales of Blu-ray Discs cited as a huge contributing factor. So what exactly is it that’s driving audiences to the format? According to the research, new and classic sci-fi titles are the key.

With industry wide revenue rising a further $3.9 billion in the last three months, new BD releases such as Thor and Star Wars: The Complete Collection are being championed as just some of the titles encouraging viewers to invest. A big deciding factor could also be the range of remastered classic movies that have also hit the shelves, such as Citizen Kane, Scarface and The Big Lebowski.

With Christmas just around the corner and a raft of quality BDs like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, The Hangover II and Rise of the Planet of the Apes set to go on sale, we’re sure the year will end with a bang.
