Blu-rays for the Weekend: Will Smith Movies

With Will Smith back on the big screen this month with Men in Black III, this week we’re looking at the best of his work so far on Blu-ray. So if you’re stuck for ideas this weekend, why not try out one of the following:

I Am Legend

Arguably one of the finest performances of his career, Smith plays Dr. Robert Neville, a military scientist who finds himself alone in the world when a viral outbreak destroys its population. With his pet dog Sam as his only companion, Neville continues to work on finding a cure for the infection and dreaming of salvation from his loneliness. Bonus features on the Blu-ray include an alternate cut of the film that offers viewers a different ending, feature Cautionary Tale: The Science of ‘I Am Legend’ which examines the real-life science behind some of the film’s ideas, a look at the work of Abby the German Shepherd who stars as Sam, a feature on the weapons used by Smith and his physical training for the role.

Hitch

Starring alongside Eva Mendes, Smith returns to his comedic roots to play dashing matchmaker Alex Hitchens – a man who guarantees to help love-struck clients woo the girl of their dreams in just three dates. With countless successes under his belt he finally meets his match when he encounters Albert (Kevin James), a socially awkward accountant hopelessly in love with his socialite client (Amber Valletta), and Sara (Mendes), a tabloid columnist hot on his trail as New York’s infamous date doctor. Extras on the BD include a gag reel and features Dance Steps Made Easy, in which Smith and James examine the films laugh-out-loud dance scene, and The Dating Experts, where director Andy Tennant, Smith and several other real-life romance experts discuss the realities of dating in the 21st century.

Independence Day

One of Smith’s most popular roles to date sees him star as hotshot fighter pilot Steven in apocalyptic alien thriller Independence Day. On July 2nd, mankind awakes to news that extra terrestrials have arrived and both panic and confusion set in. Amidst the chaos, environmentalist David (Jeff Goldblum) discovers a signal embedded in a satellite system which he determines is a countdown to an attack. With the help of Steven and the office of the President (Bill Pullman), mankind must work in union to discover the secret of the aliens and save the planet from annihilation. Special features include two feature-length commentary tracks from director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, game Alien Scavenger Hunt which tasks users with locating a dozen items throughout the film, a trivia track and much more.
