Blu-rays for the weekend: Time travel

Looper, one of this year’s most exciting and original sci-fi films, is hitting the big screen today. The film tackles the ever popular topic of time travel, so to mark the occasion, we thought we’d run through some of the best Blu-rays out now that cover similar ground.

So if you need something to watch this weekend, or something to get you in the mood for Looper, why not try out one of the following:

Back to the Future Trilogy

A teenager, a scientist and a time machine in the shape of a Delorean can only mean one thing: it’s the seminal Back to the Future Trilogy from Robert Zemeckis.

With the help of local crackpot Doc Brown, Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) finds himself stuck in 1955 and inadvertently changes the course of history in a way that means he’ll never be born. Desperately trying to find a way back into his own time, Marty recruits the help of a younger Doc Brown to get the Delorean back into working order and ensure that his parents do get together. With the two sequels to enjoy, travelling into the future and the Wild West respectively, this remastered, high-definition Blu-ray box-set is a real time travelling treat for all the family.

Terminator 2 – Judgement Day (Skynet Edition)

Terminator 2 is an absolute classic of the time travel genre, with Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his breakout role as The Terminator, a relentless killing machine from the future, except this time, he’s the good guy. In order to stop ‘Judgement Day’, a nuclear war against humanity launched by a self-aware artificial intelligence called Skynet, the Terminator must protect John Connor from the T-1000, a merciless and practically invincible rival that can impersonate anyone it touches.

The gripping action and nerve-shredding soundtrack are beautifully presented in high-definition on this special edition Terminator 2 Blu-ray. One thing’s for sure, you’ll be back.

Doctor Who – The Complete Sixth Series

As a Time Lord, Doctor Who knows a fair bit about the trials and tribulations of travelling through time. But that doesn’t mean it’s all plain sailing for the Doctor, who once again seems to be destined to die. Series 6 is another Stephen Moffat masterpiece for the long-running BBC smash hit.

Once again supported by the fiery Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and her boyfriend Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), Matt Smith’s tweed clad Doctor is in for another memorable adventure through time and space.
