Blu-rays for the weekend: The Best of the BAFTAs

Awards season has kicked off with the announcement of the BAFTA and Oscar nominations, so for this week’s Blu-rays for the Weekend we thought we’d take a look at last year’s BAFTA winners to get you in the mood ahead of the weekend.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won Best Picture at last year’s BAFTAs, and it’s easy to see why. Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and John Hurt are just a few of the supreme acting talents on show in this acclaimed adaptation of John le Carré’s spy novel. M16 agent Smiley (Oldman) investigates intelligence that suggests there is a mole at the centre of the service’s London headquarters and soon finds himself drawn into a web of betrayal and deceit in an effort to unmask the double agent who has fooled him, and his colleagues, for decades.

The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep grabbed last year’s gong for best performance in her rendition of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. The film follows an elderly Thatcher as she struggles with dementia and comes to terms with the death of her husband.

Presented in its 2.39:1 original aspect ratio, alongside a DTS Master Audio track, the Blu-ray biopic uncovers the humanity behind the highly controversial political icon. The Blu-ray also contains a number of bonus materials such as The Making of The Iron Lady, Recreating the Young Margaret Thatcher, Battle in the House of Commons, Costume Design: Pearls and Power Suits and Denis: The Man Behind the Woman.

The Help

Octavia Spencer won the award for Best Supporting Actress following her role in The Help last year. The film follows graduate Skeeter (Emma Stone), who returns to a small town in Missippi after four years at college and sees Southern society with more judgemental eyes. Skeeter recruits two maids, the stoical Aibileen (Viola Davis) and the sharp-tongued Minny (Octavia Spencer), to help her embark on a secret writing project to detail the African-American maids’ point of view on the white families they work for.
