With the start of the school summer holiday nearly upon us, this week we picked out some of the best movies about school holidays, all available in high definition on Blu-ray.
John Travolta and Olivia Newton John star as one of cinema’s most popular couples in this musical about a mismatched pair whose summer fling doesn’t come to the end they expected. Much to Danny’s surprise and embarrassment, his summer love rocks up at his school when term begins, and so ensues an epic story of teenage love told through catchy songs and energetic dancing that will have the whole family joining in. Special features on the Blu-ray include commentaries from the director and chief choreographer, a whole host of features on the production, music and cars involved as well as interviews with the cast and crew.
Stand By Me 25th Anniversary Edition
This coming-of-age story is the kind of adventure that could only happen in the summer holidays. The movie follows four boys as they hang out and grow up in one long summer coloured by possibility and imagination. The 25th Anniversary Edition features 25 Years Later: A Picture-in-Picture Commentary Retrospective, and an audio commentary with author Stephen King on his inspiration for the story.
If you’re looking for a kooky summer-time drama, why not check out Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in this coming-of-age film directed by the brains behind Superbad. Landing a boring job at a dilapidated theme park is far from what James (Jesse Eisenberg) envisaged his final summer before college to be, but when he encounters impossibly cool co-worker Em (Stewart) his summer looks set to change for good. Including a hilarious audio commentary from writer/director Greg Mottola which details plenty of the production details, on-set anecdotes and information about the film’s tone, music, and casting the BD is also packed with features such as ‘Welcome to Wonderland’ and ‘Frigo’s Ball Taps’ and interviews with the cast and crew.
