This weekend, Tom Hanks returns to the big screen in Sully, the true story about the heroic pilot who managed to land a doomed plane on the Hudson river, saving all 155 souls on board. The film tells the story of the events leading up to, during and directly after the “miracle on the Hudson”.
As the pressure from the public and the media begins to mount, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger must defend his actions against the ever-increasing pressure from both the public and the media.
We’ve picked three great Blu-rays to get you in the mood for Sully.
Flight
Denzel Washington, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman and Don Cheadle all star in this white-knuckle thriller about a pilot who miraculously lands a seemingly doomed plane.
Washington leads as Captain Whip Whitaker, an airline pilot who successfully hides his alcohol and substance addictions. However, when the plane he’s piloting suddenly experiences critical system and engine failures, it’s up to him to save the lives of those on board. After successfully landing the plane and keeping the death toll to a minimum, an investigation into the incident begins, and Whittaker realises time is running out for him. He must decide whether to come clean about his problems, or lie and face far worse consequences.
Special features include discussions with director Robert Zemeckis and the cast about the origins of Flight, a making-of feature, and a look at the special effects behind the crash.
Cast Away
Tom Hanks seems to have a bad run of luck when it comes to plane crashes. In Cast Away, he plays Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee swamped with work.
Called away on business during the holiday season, Noland waves goodbye to his partner, promising to return in time for New Year’s Eve. However, when the plane he’s on loses radio communications and suffers a catastrophic failure, he finds himself plunging into the ocean. After surviving in a life raft, he washes up onto the beach of a deserted island, with a slim chance of rescue.
The Blu-ray comes with a number of special features, including audio commentary, trivia and a heap of trailers and spots for other Fox titles.
Non-Stop
Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore star in this mid-air race-against-time thriller to find and stop a murderous terrorist.
Neeson stars as Bill Marks, a former policeman who’s still suffering from the death of his beloved daughter. To escape, he takes a job as an air marshal, which he thinks will give him an easier life. However, before he boards a flight from New York to London, Marks receives a text which tells him that unless $150m is transferred to an offshore bank account, somebody on his plane will die every twenty minutes. He then enters into a dangerous game of cat and mouse as he races against time to find the killer.
