Blu-rays for the Weekend: Stars of Man of Steel

The moment comic book fans have been waiting for has arrived – the long-awaited Man of Steel is in cinemas now and wowing audiences around the world. So this weekend we thought we’d look at some of the film’s stars’ previous work, all available to enjoy on Blu-ray. If you’re stuck for something to watch, how about trying one of these:

The Tudors (Seasons 1-4 available)

New Superman Henry Cavill first came to people’s attention in The Tudors, a historical fiction television series set primarily in sixteenth-century England and based loosely on the reign of King Henry VIII (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Cavill plays Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk in the show, while other cast members include Joely Richardson, Peter O’Toole and Sam Neill. Each season on Blu-ray includes special features to take you behind the scenes on the show, from interviews with the cast and crew to documentaries on the real Tudor history that served as inspiration.

The Muppets

Amy Adams is winning praise for her portrayal of Lois Lane, but you can see a less serious side to her in last year’s Oscar-winning The Muppets. Featuring Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear and all your other favourite Muppets alongside Adams, Jason Segal and Chris Cooper, The Muppets sees the old gang reunite to save their old theatre from an oil tycoon. Adams throws herself into the role with an all-singing, all-dancing performance that will delight the whole family. Special features include a blooper reel and documentaries on the making of the movie and the lovable Muppets themselves.

A Beautiful Mind

Russell Crowe, playing Superman’s father in Man of Steel, was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in A Beautiful Mind, a biographical drama based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics who suffered from schizophrenia. Both harrowing and moving, A Beautiful Mind shows what Crowe is capable of. Special features include commentaries with director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, as well as behind the scenes documentaries and interviews with the real John Nash.
