Blu-rays for the Weekend: Sequels part 1

The new year holds a lot of promise for movie lovers, with some big-name titles coming out, such as Wonder Woman, Get Out and Dunkirk. There’s also some revivals in the pipeline, such as Baywatch, Beauty and the Beast and Jumanji.

Among the big names of 2017 are several hotly anticipated sequels. To get you excited for what’s to come, we’ve listed the five we’re most looking forward to, and their original films, below.

Prometheus

Science fiction fans everywhere were celebrating on Christmas Day after the trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant, hit our screens.

prometheusPrometheus takes us back to where the Alien series all began, in the year 2093. The film follows a crew of explorers and archaeologists on a mission to explore a planet where they believe civilization may have originated. Starring Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce, the film is a fitting start to one of science fiction’s most famous and horrifying franchises.

The Blu-ray comes with a wealth of special features, including commentary by Ridley Scott, deleted and alternate scenes, as well as a number of fictional features about the mysterious Peter Weyland.

Alien: Covenant picks up in the years after the Prometheus expedition, as the crew of the colony spaceship Covenant discover a planet which they believe is an unchartered paradise. However, the truth, as always, is far more dangerous.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

kingsmanKingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, a streetwise teenager who’s recruited by a dapper secret agent to become a Kingsman – a secret organisation sworn to protect the realm.

It’s a star-studded action adventure, featuring Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Michael Caine, Samuel L. Jackson and more. The Blu-ray comes with a number of bonus extras, including a behind-the-scenes documentary, a look at the sets and props, and a look at the making of a 21st century spy.

The film’s sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, picks up following the events of the first film, and transports us across to the United States and the organisation’s American counterparts.

Pirates of the Caribbean

The first instalment of the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, captivated audiences all over the world, starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in a swashbuckling adventure.

piratesWe follow pirate Jack Sparrow (Depp) and blacksmith Will Turner (Bloom) who are on the hunt for the beautiful Elizabeth Swann, the missing daughter of Governor Swann. The search leads them into the path of the cursed Captain Barbosa (Rush) and his crew of undead pirates.

Since first hitting our screens, there have been three subsequent adventures. Now, a fifth one is confirmed, called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, starring the familiar faces of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, as well as newcomer Javier Bardem.
