Blu-rays For the Weekend: Police movies

With the new, big-screen version of classic British police series The Sweeney hitting the big screens this week with Ray Winstone and Ben ‘Plan B’ Drew in the lead roles, we thought we’d share a few of our police movie favourites from Blu-ray Disc Reporter HQ. If you’re stuck for inspiration this weekend, why not try out one of the following:

The Departed

The 2006 crime thriller The Departed, directed by Martin Scorsese, is one of the most critically acclaimed police movies of all time. With an all star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson, the acting is top-notch and what better way to witness this action packed thriller than in glorious high-definition?

Set in Boston, Massachusetts, Irish Mob Boss Frankie ‘Frank’ Costello (Nicholson) is wreaking havoc on the streets. By planting a mole inside the police department Costello thinks he’s untouchable. But how long will it take before he realises the police have a mole of their own in his gang? This police epic will keep you guessing until the very last minute.

Hot Fuzz

For a more comedic take on the British police, look no further than another side-splitting comedy from director Edgar Wright and his two favourite leading men: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

After showing up all his London colleagues with 400 arrests, super-cop Nicholas Angel (Pegg) is transferred to an idyllic village with the lowest crime rate in England. With the upcoming yearly ‘best village’ awards on the horizon, tensions are already running high when an unprecedented number of gruesome deaths occurs, leaving Angel to do what he does best. This typically British comedy is an essential modern classic, and looks better than ever in crystal-clear HD.

21 Jump Street

Continuing with the funnier side of policework, 21 Jump Street is a hilarious buddy-cop movie for the modern era. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill star as two blundering cops, sent undercover to a high school in order to expose a drug scandal.

Based on the hit 90s television show, 21 Jump Street is a classic cop comedy as you witness these two underachievers attempt to solve the biggest case of their careers.  With plenty of behind the scenes features, commentaries and deleted scenes, this Blu-ray is perfect for weekend.
