Blu-rays for the Weekend: Independence Day

The long-awaited sequel to Independence Day has landed in cinemas, exciting sci-fi fans all over the world.

Independence Day: Resurgence will see Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner return alongside newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Maika Monroe and William Fichtner. Set twenty years after the first invasion, Earth has learned from its past mistakes and has invested heavily in state-of-the-art space defence networks. However, when the vengeful aliens return, it appears that despite all the preparation, Earth may be not able to match the aggression and power of the extra-terrestrial enemies.

To get you in the mood for Independence Day: Resurgence, we’ve picked our three favourite epic alien invasion movies available on Blu-ray:

Cloverfield

Cloverfield first hit our screens in 2008, and is shot in a “found footage” style. It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted!cloverfield

Starring Mike Vogel, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller and Jessica Lucas, Cloverfield follows a group of friends who are forced to flee into the streets of New York while an unimaginable monster destroys the city. We see the story unfold through their own eyes, while also getting glimpses into the backstory through old footage on the tape.

Watching Cloverfield on Blu-ray puts you right in the thick of the action, in first person high definition. The Blu-ray also comes with a number of special features, including an enhanced viewing mode with GPS tracking, a documentary, and a look at the making-of the movie.

War of the Worlds

This retelling of the classic H.G. Wells novel stars Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto and Tim Robbins, and is the second film to be based on it.War of the worlds

Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, an estranged father who wants nothing more than to be the perfect dad. When his ex-wife, Rachel, drops their two children off to stay with him for the weekend, neither could have known what was about to happen. When strange lights begin appearing in the sky, it soon becomes clear that we are not alone in the universe, and we’re not the only ones who want to lay claim to this planet.

Special features include interviews with director Steven Spielberg about alien invasion films, production stills, and behind-the-scenes features.

Battle: Los Angeles

Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and Michael Peña team up in this epic invasion movie set in the City of Angels.

Battle: Los Angeles sees major cities around the world get bombarded with strange Battle los angelesmeteors, which culminates in aliens emerging from the sea off the coast of Los Angeles. The military is drafted in to rescue civilians trapped in alien-occupied territory, but they’re up against the clock as the Air Force has been ordered to bomb the entire area to stop the spread.
