Blu-rays for the Weekend: Halloween!

Next Monday is Halloween, and that means that this weekend, it’s time to get spooky! We’ve picked our three favourite scary films available now on Blu-ray. The films we’ve chosen are a trip down memory lane to the classic slasher genre, so get ready to hide behind the sofa, because something wicked this way comes…

Scream

The Scream franchise is arguably one of the most iconic slasher movies, with the infamous mask still frightening people every year at Halloween. It even inspired a TV show currently scaring audiences every week.scream

But the original Scream, starring Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Drew Barrymore, Scream attempts to subvert the very genre it’s part of. The film follows Sidney Presscott, a high school student who’s plagued by a number of strange phone calls a year after her mother’s death. It soon transpires that her and her friends are being targeted by a sinister serial killer in a mask. As the bodycount increases, it’s up to Sidney and her friends to unmask the killer, and solve the mystery of her mother’s death.

The Blu-ray comes with a number of special features, including a behind-the-scenes documentary, Q&A with the cast and crew, two trailers and seven TV adverts.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

One of the classic slasher films, 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street features a very young Johnny Depp.nightmare-on-elm-street

It tells the story of a teenage girl, Nancy Thompson, and her group of friends who all live on a quiet suburban street, called Elm Street. However, when her friends are targeted by a fearsome clawed serial killer

, known as Freddy Krueger, Nancy must think quickly to stop the bloodshed. But when you’re at your most vulnerable when you’re asleep, how do you stay awake long enough to solve the mystery and stay alive?

A Nightmare on Elm Street inspired six sequels (and a remake), all of which are available as part of a Blu-ray collection, which comes with a bumper pack of special features for each film.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer plays heavily on the theme of revenge, after a group of American teenagers swear themselves to secrecy after a hit and run incident.i-know-what-you-did-last-summer

However, exactly one year later, each of them receives a sinister message: “I know what you did last summer.” What is initially shrugged off as a prank soon turns into a fight for their lives as a mysterious fishhook-wielding stranger appears. As he stalks the teenagers, the group must work out how to make amends for their actions, or ensure the stranger is dead for good this time.

The Blu-ray comes with a number of bonus extras, including audio commentary by director Jim Gillespie, a short film, and a look at the origins behind I Know What You Did Last Summer.
