Blu-rays for the Weekend: Best sailing movies

With the start of the summer and the weather across Europe at last picking up, everyone is heading down to the seaside. So this weekend, if you’re feeling in the mood for some sailing, why not take a look at some of these top maritime movies, all available in high definition on Blu-ray.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Russell Crowe takes the lead as brash British captain “Lucky” Jack Aubrey on the H.M.S. Surprise during the Napoleonic wars. When his ship is suddenly attacked, Jack pushes his crew to breaking point as he sets out in an epic chase of a formidable French war vessel. As well as deleted scenes, the Blu-ray features some extras to bring the experience to life, including a trivia featurette and a ship locator map which viewers can turn on at any point in the movie.

 

The Perfect Storm

Based on a true story, The Perfect Storm invites you to watch as some commercial fisherman, captained by George Clooney, are caught in the grips of a tempest so fierce that it only happens once a century. The movie is an epic feat in special effects perfectly depicting waves over ten stories high and winds over 120mph. The Blu-ray version includes three feature length commentary tracks, as well as some in-depth insights into recreating the conditions behind the storm.

 

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

The swashbuckling adventure charts the heroics of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) an eccentric rogue of a pirate who dives head first into the lives of the Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and wannabe buccaneer Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). Overflowing with sword fighting, treasure hunting and mutinous pirates galore, this whirlwind tale is sure to satisfy the whole family, from the haunting beginning to the rip roaring conclusion. The Blu-ray extras uncover behind-the-scenes secrets and look at the technicalities of filming a blockbuster at sea.
