Blu-rays for the Weekend: Best of DreamWorks Animation

This weekend, Kung Fu Panda 3, the latest instalment of the furry franchise, hits cinemas across the UK.

Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan and Seth Rogen are among the stars to return, lending their voices to this hilarious animated comedy. The franchise tells the story Po Ping, a giant panda with a weight problem who is chosen as the prophesied dragon warrior.

To get you in the mood, here is a selection of DreamWorks Animation’s best work – as ever, all available on Blu-ray…

Shrek

Since its initial release in 2001, the Shrek franchise has gone on to become one of DreamWorks Animation’s most popular, leading to a further three films, a theatre production and numerous spin-offs and television specials.Shrek

Featuring an all-star cast including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, Shrek turns the traditional fairytale upside-down. It tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who falls in love with a beautiful princess, called Fiona, who of course needs rescuing from a tower guarded by a dragon. Before long, Shrek and his donkey become the unlikely heroes despite the best efforts of the evil Lord Farquaad.

You can get all four Shrek movies on Blu-ray as part of a collection – a must-have for any animated film fan.

Madagascar

There’s more animal-based capers in Madagascar, featuring the voices of Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith. Madagascar

Madagascar follows a group of animals bred in captivity in a New York zoo, who inadvertently find themselves on the plains of Africa. Having no idea how to adapt to their natural environment, the animals must band together in order to survive and break free of their pampered lifestyles.

You can get your hands on all three Madagascar films on Blu-ray as part of a collection, which includes a number of special features such as music videos, games and filmmaker commentary.

How to Train Your Dragon

Based on the novel by Cressida Cowell, DreamWorks Animation bought this adorable story to life with a little help from Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Kristen Wiig and Jonah Hill.How to train your dragon

How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of a young Viking named Hiccup, who wants to help in the fight against the dragons that terrorise his hometown. Going against his father’s wishes, Hiccup brings down a dragon, but can’t find it in himself to kill it. Instead, he and the dragon become best friends, soon realising that there’s a lot that they can each learn about the other’s species.
