Blu-rays for the Weekend: Fairytale Movies

With the Jack the Giant Killer trailer recently revealed, and Kristen Stewart set to star in a dark reimagining of Snow White and the Huntsman this year, it seems fairytale movies are well and truly set to make their mark in 2012. So if you’re stuck for ideas over the weekend, why let one of the following Blu-ray Discs cast its spell on you!

Featuring all four adventures, this box set is a magical reminder that fairytales aren’t just for kids! With subtle adult humour and brilliant clichés, Shrek turns the genre on its head as the ogre and his gang, voiced by Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas, cause chaos and mayhem in The Kingdom of Far Far Away. An abundance of exclusive BD features await viewers, including deleted scenes, interactive games, a preview of Shrek the Musical, a look at the character designs, animation techniques, songs, scripts and multiple interviews with the cast and crew.

Enchanted

Enchanted is a terrific, contemporary fairy tale which mixes in live action with hand drawn animation to great effect, and in true storybook style it’s got a princess, a baddie and a clutch of catchy songs the whole family can enjoy! Amy Adams stars as a cartoon princess catapulted into the real world of New York City. With great performances from Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden, this BD truly is modern day fantasy at its finest. Extras include trivia tracks, commentaries and interviews with the cast and crew, a look at the costumes and special effects involved in creating hand drawn characters for the real world, and much more.

Beauty and the Beast 3D

Earlier this year Walt Disney Pictures delighted fans of its classic animations by giving Beauty and the Beast a Blu-ray 3D makeover. Delivering the most enchanting experience for audiences to date with stunning 3D imagery, the beloved movie charts the adventure of Belle (voiced by Paige O’Hara), a bright and beautiful young woman taken prisoner in a magical castle by a hideous beast. What Culture was certainly impressed by the 3D handiwork of the magicians at Disney, rating the release ‘stunning’. Special features include deleted scenes, alternate openings and endings alongside production features, games and activities, as well as a feature-length documentary called Beyond Beauty.
