Feathers are set to fly when Darren Aronofsky’s Oscar winning masterpiece Black Swan dances its way onto Blu-ray Disc throughout Europe in May. US website Cinema Blend has the inside track on what viewers can expect from the release and awarded it a glowing four-star review.
Natalie Portman’s turn as fragile ballerina Nina Sayers earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress and given the strength of her performance, it’s easy to see why. Nina is a quiet, dedicated dancer whose prim and proper exterior implies peace and calm, yet inside her a cocktail of paranoia and insecurity bubbles away. Add to this immense pressure from her domineering mother Erica (Barbara Hershey), flirtatious advances by the company director Thomas (Vincent Cassel) and the threat of losing her starring role to fellow dancer Lily (Mila Kunis), and here lies the perfect recipe for a twisted ballet horror.
So what makes Black Swan such a spectacle on Blu-ray?
Cinema Blend praises the fantastic script, direction and picture quality of the BD but what really captures their attention is the range and quality of extras on offer. Aware audiences are desperate to get under the skin and behind the scenes of this extraordinary film, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has rolled out a plethora of intriguing features. ‘Cast Profiles’ includes in-depth commentaries from Portman, Hershey and Cassell and ‘Ten Years in the Making’ sees the director discuss the mammoth creative process behind filming the psychological ballet thriller. For those intrigued by the stunning costumes paraded throughout the film, ‘Behind the Curtain’ gives access to production with input from Amy Westcott at the Rodarte costume house and ‘Black Swan: Metamorphosis’ gives a 50-minute inside look at the entire film-making process.
