For this week’s Blu-ray Monday we’re giving away a brand new Blu-ray copy of Focus: a hip, fast-paced thriller and Will Smith’s ‘come-back’ movie.
Smith plays experienced (but somewhat damaged) conman Nicky Spurgeon, who has an affair with the beautiful Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie), an ‘intern’ he is teaching how to pull off small tricks (an ignoble education). After going their separate ways, they meet again three years later and find themselves on opposite sides of the same big con, except this time Jess is now a skilled confidence trickster. As they each try to successfully carry out a risky scheme, Nicky’s plans go awry due to the involvement of his former flame.
This is stylish and entertaining romantic crime comedy with lots of twists and turns, which looks stunning on high-definition Blu-ray. As usual you have two chances to win. Heist films always go down a treat. (Focus actually includes an interesting homage to The Thomas Crown Affair – its theme song “Windmills of your Mind” plays in the background in one scene, and during the closing credits.) So this week, we’d love to know what your favourite screen heist is and why. Ocean’s Eleven is classy; Reservoir Dogs is brutal; Inception is cerebral; Casino will take you back in time; True Romance is a cult favourite; Usual Suspects is exceptional…and the list goes on. Which film stands out for you?
