Great news for audiophiles this week, as Universal Music announced the arrival of the first ever batch of High Fidelity Pure Audio (HFPA) Blu-rays. The new discs mean Blu-ray fans will be able to listen to their favourite artists in truly uncompressed, crystal clear audio from the 21st October.
The initial catalogue will feature 27 heritage albums including Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, Nirvana’s Nevermind and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On? as well as classical releases including the Berlin Philharmonic’s interpretation of Mahler’s Symphony No.5 and Rolando Vilazon’s Verdi collection.
Olivier Robert-Murphy, global head of new business at Universal Music Group hopes the discs will revolutionise the way people listen to music, commenting: “We are very excited about the potential for High Fidelity Pure Audio, allowing music lovers to experience the work of artists in a way that has never before been possible.”
The new Blu-ray Discs will provide better quality encodings than CDs or MP3 and can be played on Blu-ray Players, compatible computers and the PlayStation 3. The Xbox One and PS4 will also be able to play the HFPA Blu-ray Discs after their respective launches.
