With Sherlock and Star Trek star Benedict Cumberbatch set to play an Amazon explorer in The Lost City of Z, it seems the perfect time to look back at some of the other great adventure movies. So don’t get stuck for something to watch this weekend – load up one of these high-def Blu-rays and go on a journey into the unknown…
The Hobbit
A classic tale of adventure that almost needs no introduction. After a surprise visit by the blue wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo Baggins is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Bilbo’s journey takes them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer. The Blu-ray – available in 2D or 3D – contains 130 minutes of additional special features, including a full suite of production videos, as Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson takes the audience behind the scenes, on location and amidst the star-studded cast in a series of video journals.
Castaway
When high flying Fed-ex executive Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) flight crashes his life is turned upside down. Castaway, with only his volleyball Wilson for company, Chuck must learn how to sustain himself in the wild. The Blu-ray brings the adventure to life in high definition, complete with a director’s commentary and a trivia track. If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss one of Tom Hnaks’ all time classic performances.
Into the Wild
This film, based on the novel by Jon Krakauer, tells the real life story of Christopher McKandless (Emile Hirsch), a young man who sets out on an epic adventure to escape his mundane suburban life. Christopher’s adventures lead him up to embark on a journey across America and ultimately up to Alaska. The stunning scenery in this adventure movie looks awesome on Blu-ray, and comes with a whole host of extras including piece with director Sean Penn on bringing Christopher McKandless’ life to the screen. Inspiring and moving, Into The Wild is not to be missed.
