Blu-rays for the Weekend – The Hobbit

With Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit storming into cinemas before Christmas and still drawing crowds now, audiences around the world are being welcomed back into the fantastic world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. Whether you’ve seen The Hobbit already or planning to catch it soon, here are some of the film’s stars’ finest other moments, all available on Blu-ray for you to enjoy in high definition this weekend:

X-Men Quadrilogy

Before Ian McKellen donned Gandalf’s grey robes, he wore a slightly different outfit – the unmistakable red costume of villainous Magneto from Marvel Comic’s X-Men. Appearing in the first three movies in this Quadrilogy set, X-Men was one of the first of today’s modern superhero genre and remains one of the best. With incredible sets, costumes and visual effects, the whole series looks even better on high-definition Blu-ray.

Sherlock – Complete Series One & Two

Martin Freeman had moderate success on the big screen before The Hobbit, but his TV work is among the very best. As well as a key role in Ricky Gervais’ original The Office, Freeman came into his own in the critically acclaimed Sherlock, the modern reimagining of one of fiction’s greatest detectives. Told in style and with real visual panache by Dr Who alumnus Stephen Moffat, this collection of the first two series is not to be missed.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

You might not see his face, but Andy Serkis is undeniably one of the stars of The Hobbit in his unforgettable role as Gollum. Serkis is a master of performance capture, learned in films such as the original LOTR trilogy, King Kong and Tintin. But it was with Rise of the Planet of the Apes that he truly proved how moving a performance like this can be. Playing Caesar, a highly intelligent ape destined to lead a revolution, Serkis truly raises the bar with a stunning display. Catch it on Blu-ray to enjoy the incredible special effects to their maximum potential.
