With the summer holidays fast approaching, this week we’re looking at the best holiday movies on Blu-ray. So if you’re stuck for ideas this weekend, why not try out one of the following:
Mamma Mia!
Sun, sea and a whole lot of singing, Mamma Mia! sees an ensemble cast of some of Hollywood’s finest talent bring the
ABBA themed musical to the big screen in spectacular style. A colossal hit at the box office, Meryl Streep stars as single mother Donna, the proprietor of a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island. Unbeknownst to her, soon to be wed daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) has invited three suitors from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise (Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth) each of whom has potential to be her biological father. Featuring classic ABBA songs such as Dancing Queen, S.O.S. and Take a Chance on Me, Mamma Mia! bonus materials include features on the various musical numbers, a making of documentary and a look at the training of the stars for their musical performances.
Everyone’s favourite social outcasts return for a fun packed adventure as Will (Simon Bird), Simon (Joe Thomas), Jay (James Buckley) and Neil (Blake Harrison) finish school and embark on their first holiday together. Two weeks in party capital Malia with no parents, no teachers and no chance of attracting the opposite sex, the boys face all manner of obstacles in this laugh out loud coming-of-age comedy. Special features include an extended cut alongside the theatrical version of the film and over two hours of unseen material. A Making Of documentary, deleted scenes, bloopers and a look at the London premiere, as well as funny featurettes such as Joe Thomas: Dangerman and Things We Did Instead of Rehearsing, the BD offers a great way to get up and close with the characters in their first big-screen outing.
Dirty Dancing
Relive the ultimate 60s vacation in this romantic drama starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. 17-year-old New Yorker Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman (Grey) takes a trip with her family to a plush resort. She soon develops a crush on dashing dance instructor Johnny (Swayze), leader of the working-class entertainment staff and on being invited to a secret after-hours party, she observes everyone letting loose and dirty dancing for the first time. Special features on the two disc Collector’s Edition include a look at the dance sequences, interviews with the cast and crew and a retrospective interview with Swayze on the late actor’s thoughts on the film which impacted his career so significantly.
