The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has reported Blu-ray sales in the USA rose by 23% in the first quarter of 2012, totalling sales of $541 million. Standalone Blu-ray player sales across this period totalled 2.4 million, with the number of installed base units now just shy of 41 million.
DEG’s results show home video spending has increased year-on-year for the first time in two years. With Blu-ray now accounting for over a quarter of all physical discs revenue, the format is going from strength to strength.
With a number of exciting releases scheduled for the coming months such as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and The Woman in Black, the future looks bright for Blu-ray.
