With the premiere for The Woman in Black taking place recently, this week, we’re focusing on the best ghost movies available on Blu-ray. So if you’re stuck for something to watch this weekend why not try out one of the following?
Ghost
Part comedy, part romance, part supernatural thriller, Ghost was one of the biggest box-office smash hits of the 90s, with a terrific cast including Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg and Demi Moore. Swayze stars as handsome banker Sam who is tragically killed following a mugging. But instead of following the shining light that appears before him, he stays on Earth and enlists the help of psychic Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg) to warn his wife Molly (Moore) that his death was no accident. Viewers will fall in love with this timeless tale all over again on Blu-ray thanks to its HD picture, audio quality and insightful bonus features such as a commentary track from director Jerry Zucker, interviews with the cast and crew and a look at the infamous pottery love scene that defined the film over the years.
Ghostbusters
Delivering a deliciously over-the-top approach to ghost hunting, Ghostbusters remains one of the greats of the genre and a classic in many filmgoers’ eyes. Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Rick Moranis as three unemployed parapsychology professors who set up shop as a unique ghost removal service, zany one-liners and physical humour come thick and fast in this brilliant movie. Multiple features on the Blu-ray include commentary tracks with the writer, producer and director, picture galleries, a look at the locations, special effects, costumes and set design as well as Slimer Mode which provides picture-in-picture interview segments with cast and crew as they share their thoughts on the entirety of the production.
Paranormal Activity
This clever, refreshing take on the self-shot, low budget horror movie was 2007’s runaway success, and has since gone on to spawn two successful sequels. Written and directed by Oren Peli, the film centres on a young couple haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. Presented in a style much like films such as The Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield, this Blu-ray follows the couple as they attempt to capture what is haunting them on film. Special features include a look at deleted scenes, alternative endings, a history on the development of the project, the filming devices and techniques used as well as a look at the movie’s global success. The second instalment is currently available and the third will be released later this month on Blu-ray.
