With recent news from Pixar on a new Toy Story short, Cars 2 on Blu-ray and the highly anticipated sequel to Monsters Inc, this week we’re focusing on the best films they currently have to offer on BD. So if you’re stuck for ideas this weekend, why not try out one of the following:
Toy Story 1-3 Box Set
Holding the mantle of highest grossing animated film franchise in box office history, there’s no denying the Toy Story movies are amongst the best loved of all time. Brimming with gripping adventure, magnificent satire and lump-in-the-throat nostalgia, the BD box set provides layer after layer of added insight in stunning HD. All three movies follow the adventures of a group of toys lead by traditional cowboy doll Woody (Tom Hanks) and futuristic space ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). A plethora of exclusive extras are spread across the four disc collection, including a look at the original character designs, animation techniques, music and audio, commentaries from the team of writers and directors, as well as shorts introduced by Buzz and a look at the alternative story and concept that was canned in favour of the film we’re all familiar with today.
The Incredibles
Why settle for just one superhero when you can have a whole family? A winner for die-hard superhero fans young and old, the witty BD packs a highly entertaining punch. Dubbed the ‘Watchmen for kids’, the story follows Bob Paar (Craig T. Nelson) a retired superhero who’s desperate to re-live his glory days as one of the world’s best known crime-fighters, Mr. Incredible. Forced into adopting civilian identities, Bob’s wife (Holly Hunter) and three super-powered children try to maintain a typical suburban lifestyle until Bob accepts a mysterious mission on a remote island. Included on the BD is a film maker’s roundtable, an interactive island game, and featurettes offering insiders access to the animation process from start to finish with ‘Paths to Pixar’ and ‘Ending With a Bang!’.
Wall-E
Last but by no means least, comes Wall-E, a pristine and flawless animation from the wizards at Pixar that has to be seen to be believed. Telling the story of a loveable robot stuck on an abandoned, desolate Earth, the film follows his journey from solitary worker to space adventurer. Awarded 5/5 by Blu-ray.com, the BD boasts exceptional sound and picture quality alongside a range of impressive extras including a look at the original story boards, a tour inside the animation and music suites, an audio commentary track from director Andrew Stanton and deleted scenes. Also included is standout feature ‘The Pixar Story’ which takes viewers on a guided tour of the history behind the company, with interviews of all the key players involved with its formation to date.
