Blu-ray 3D: A big hit in the U.S.

According to a recent report by the IHS Screen Digest, U.S. audiences can’t get enough of Blu-ray 3D Discs, snapping up 3.5 million since the format was first released 12 months ago.

Consumers bought 1.75 million  stand alone BD3Ds and a further 1.7 million as part of hardware bundle deals. Citing increased interest in 3D as a key factor in propelling sales, the IHS predicts the number of titles and units sold will increase in the second half of 2011 with more consumers adopting 3D Blu-ray players and 3DTVs into their homes.

Jan Saxton, Senior Analyst of Film Entertainment at IHS commented on the new wave of 3D fanatics:

‘Consumers are finding that 3D is one of the most fun concepts in home entertainment since colour TV, providing true three-dimensional pictures right in their living room. Once they have 3D in the home, they love it and are hungry for content, snapping up BD3D movies as soon as they become available.’

Earlier this year, we brought you the news that Disney is up-scaling a selection of its most beloved animations to BD3D. Titles confirmed so far include The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Expect many more BD3D announcements throughout the rest of the year.
